Part of the job of a professional piano technician is knowing how to keep performance pianos in aesthetically appealing conditions.
There are many ways to fix this ding properly, but before I get into the details of that, how about giving voice to the piano’s despair and letting out a cathartic expression of disgust…. Gasp! Waah! Arghh! How did this even happen!!!? Sigh. : /
Ok now that’s over with, I’ll describe the lengthy process it takes to make this disappear and go away invisibly like nothing happened…
Enter the world of surface finish treatments and the chemical mysteries of touchup work.
First of all, there are several really interesting things to notice here. This piano was refinished by Phenoyd Classic Woods in Los Angeles, one of the very best piano Refinishers in the country. Noteworthy to point out is the lower layer of grey. I believe this to be an epoxy fairing compound which sands easily, possibly micro glass filled to be lightweight, fill the wood grains but also smooth over other deep gouges that this piano inevitably has suffered a long history of… having institutional usage for many decades… all hidden under the beautiful job Phenoyd did in 2018.
